Lilies in the Sun and Wind: The Story Behind the Painting
Lilies in the Sun and Wind was created in honor of a dear elderly friend of mine who died a couple of years ago. She was one of the most helpful, beautiful and cheerful ladies I have ever met.
There I was, four or five decades younger than her, and she was the one who would find ways to help ME. She gave me rides when my husband was at work with our one car, baked cookies for the kids and had all of us over to dinner when my husband's parents came to visit from Norway.
Esta never complained about her own health problems and always inquired about the welfare of others. Esta was quite devoted to her religious beliefs and must have spent hours a day in prayer.
In Christian symbolism, the lily means the ascension to heaven. So, these lilies were painted in honor of one who is surely enjoying the fruits of a long life filled with love and purposeful activity.
